I met Shrishail and Rudra during my Kuari pass trek, done in December last year. We bonded well during our stay in Rishikesh after the trek where I showed them around the place which I am very familiar with. Upon return, we got busy with our regular schedule. Last week, they contacted me and proposed a meet-up. A short trek seemed ideal for this get together. I picked Handi Gundi Betta - a trek I have never previously done.
On Sunday, the 2nd of March 2025, I met Rudra on Mysore Road. Shrishail joined us at Kengeri. We made a quick stop at Bidadi to eat the famous Thatte idli which I think are highly overrated.
Directions: Handi Gundi betta is located off Mysore Road, close to Ramanagara town. There are multiple locations on google maps that can confuse you. We took the one to Dasaradoddi first. This village is on the other side of the trail and from here, it is not easy to climb the hill. Therefore the location you need to look for is Shri Handigundi Bettadatalu Temple. This is located in Basavanapura. Please ask the locals for direction in case of confusion.
We parked our car near the temple and began our trek. Follow the mud path towards the hill until you see a narrow path on your right, leading up the hill. You will notice some arrow marks at the beginning of the trail. We met two groups on the way who were returning.
Thankfully the weather was pleasant and the sun mostly hid behind a thick layer of clouds. We were the only ones at the summit.
We sat there for around 30 minutes discussing life. Rudra and Shri are both in their early 30's and are going through the phase of questioning life's choices. They had questions and I had personal experience to share. It was a great conversation as we sat there, enjoying the view and relishing over some theplas that I had brought.
On our way back, we saw more people trek up. Some youngsters ride their bike half way up.
We stopped at Shri's house for a satiating meal. I particularly liked the peanut chutney puddi his wife had prepared. She was kind enough to pack a box of it for me and share the recipe. It is now a regular on my dinning table that everyone relishes.
The trek was relaxing and refreshing, not only because there were not many people there but also because it is accessible without any intervention from the authorities. Perhaps thus, I felt free!
