My friend, Rakesh and I planned a trek together while he was visiting India. As they have stopped trekking in Savandurga hills, I decided to do Shivagange. No prior registrations are required to trek here. On the 24th of September, a Tuesday morning, I picked up Rakesh on the way and headed towards Tumakur. On our way, we stopped for breakfast at Pakkashala.
Before Dobbaspet, you have to take a left deviation to Shivangange. This stretch between highway and the hill is scenic and passes through paddy fields, orchards and small villages.
There was hardly any crowd at the base. We parked our cars, paid a parking fee of Rs40 and began our climb. You have to climb all the way up to the temple entrance and then take a left deviation to enter the trekking trail. All previous entry points have been closed. In case of doubt, please ask someone at the entrance.
The trek was slightly challenging, but also interesting. The weather was pleasant. Due to the recent rains, the surroundings had turned lush green.
There are some challenging portions on the trail, but railings have been arranged to aid the climb.
Monkeys can be a menace as they jump over your back and try to snatch food or the bag you are carrying. So, be careful!
At the summit, there were very few people. A young boy named Santhosh was setting up his stall near the temple. We had lime soda there. After taking a few time lapses and relaxing for a bit , we headed back.
On our way back, we visited the temple. Free lunch is served at the dining hall located along the steps leading to the temple. The food is basic but hot and very tasty.
Post lunch, we drove back to Bangalore. It was a short but refreshing trek. I have found an alternative to Savandurga. Though not as challenging and interesting as Savandurga, trekking Shivagange is easier; without any registration and guides.
